Thomas Köner

His works are audiovisual meditations that explore our concept of time, memory and location. He invites the audience to enjoy the sensations of depth, distance and disappearance, and to explore the properties of space around the limits of our perception.

Thomas Köner (born 1965 in Bochum, Germany) studied at the Musikhochschule Dortmund and CEM Studio Arnhem. As a media artist, Thomas Köner is an outstanding figure in the fields of contemporary music, techno and multimedia art, working in the areas of composition, visual arts, installation work and music production. For over three decades, his work has been recognized around the world and he has distinguished himself in all areas of his artistic activity, receiving the most prestigious awards, such as Golden Nica Ars Electronica (Linz), Transmediale Award (Berlin), Best Young Artist at ARCO (Madrid), and many more.

His knowledge of the visual and sound arts resulted in numerous assignments to create music for silent films for the Auditorium du Musée du Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Center Pompidou and others. Similarly, he has created installations for various situations, for example ISEA (International Symposium on Electronic Arts) at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes Santiago de Chile, to name one.

Thomas Köner continues his close relationship with sound art, creating radiophonic works for national radios in Germany and France (Deutschlandradio Kultur, WDR Studio Akustische Kunst, Radio France), while working as a live performer, composer and producer. His musical compositions from the early 1990s, including the albums Permafrost, Nunatak and Teimo, were considered pioneers in the field of minimal-electronics and are still in print (Type Label). His current album Novaya Zemlya has been released by Touch. Köner’s acclaimed production skills in his duet Porter Ricks, whose album Biokinetics has been considered a “classic techno sound”, resulted in a commission to remix, among others, Nine Inch Nails by Trent Reznor.
