Rafał Gorzycki
KComposer and drummer from Bydgoszcz. He is counted among the most important and creative composers, drummers and jazz musicians in Poland and Europe. He is an extremely prolific artist, having recorded 21 original albums so far. Bands co-created by Gorzycki include Sing Sing Penelope, Ecstasy Project and Dziki Jazz all contributed to a generational change in Polish jazz - they were hailed as important musical discoveries during the last decade.
Gorzycki is an artist with a classical and jazz background, fascinated by contemporary chamber music and contemporary jazz. Currently, he is studying “Composition” at the Faculty of Composition and Music Theory of the Academy of Music Bydgoszcz in the class of professor Zbigniew Bargielski.
The largest American jazz portal All About Jazz awarded Gorzycki the title of “The Best Coming Premiere” for his original album “Realium” (2007). Another American publishing house - “Moon in June” - the publisher of the legendary Soft Machine, placed two of Rafał’s songs in 2014 on their compilation containing the most interesting jazz music from around the world. In 2010, he was nominated for “Fryderyk” for the album “Dziki Jazz.” A year later, the Dziki Jazz quartet was awarded the “Polish Music Lovers Award” in the “Free Jazz” category (Polish Radio Three Program). Rafał Gorzycki is a scholarship holder of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and he has received scholarships from the Marshal of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship as well as from the City of Bydgoszcz several times. He is also a laureate of the Artistic Award of the Mayor of Bydgoszcz.
The artist is a member of the Polish Phonographic Academy, the Polish Jazz Association and a member of the Board of the Mózg Artistic Association. Gorzycki performs on stages and festivals all over Europe (also in Asia and the USA), and his albums are noticed and distinguished by the media - both in Europe and overseas.
Rafał composed music for three feature films and two theater performances. In 2011 and 2012, Gorzycki was recognized as the “Artist of the Year” and was ranked 5th and 9th in Jazzarium’s Top 10 ranking, respectively, and his album THEY WERE P was ranked among the ten most important albums of the year. PLAYING was recognized as one of the best albums in 2016.
